The new building excels at seamlessly coexisting with the pear tree, its purism aesthetic is consistent throughout.

The town of Maienfeld is not only very attractive as an area for wine growing, but also as a place to live in the Bündner region. The characteristic walls around the Wingert, as the winegrowing areas are called in the local dialect of Alemannic, run like a finely woven spider's web through the town area separating public streets from private space.

The plot, which is located on an arterial road out of the city, was approved for development so that four new residential buildings could be constructed. The former vineyard is home to three large pear trees, one of which, together with the vineyard walls, forms a beautiful ensemble that is typical of the region.

«We used the pear tree, the old vineyard walls, and the needs of the client as a basis to create a project that is as precise as it is tailored for the family with two children.»

– Christoph Cavigelli

The project plays with these two characteristic elements – at times it is the vineyard wall alone, which in combination with the garage forms an enclosed entrance; at other times it is the pear tree, the canopy of which seems to protrude into the parents' bathroom. In front of the piano room the two elements meet and together with the house form a sheltered place to linger, which in high summer is visited by the mild rays of the evening sun.

somewhere between indoors and outdoors

The living room floor with its fireplace is oriented towards the spacious garden, and is visually limited by the low naturally formed stone wall outside. The separation between inside and outside, between warm and cold, is achieved by a technically sophisticated, filigree glazing with electrically controllable sliding panels, creating a sense of inside space for living that is nonetheless outside in the garden. The bedroom floor above gives the open floor plan on the first floor stability, and clears the way to the beautiful view of the Pfäfers Benedictine monastery from the 8th century.

Old ideas given an update. The typical historical vineyard walls of the region around Maienfeld were a determining element for the design (back right in picture). The architect took the idea a few stones further and added a new curved wall.

Bubbles in the forest? With a view of the old pear tree behind the house, you can let your thoughts wander free among the trees from the comfort of the bathtub.

Simply furnished. Because there are many built-in cupboards in the house, there was little need for additional free-standing furniture. Nevertheless one thing in particular was important to the owners: a chest of drawers that has been in the family for generations, and probably originated in Central Switzerland.

Free of frontiers. The floor-to-ceiling glazing on the first floor is from SkyFrame and can be opened completely, creating a seamless transition between living space and terrace, frontier-free. In summer in particular it’s ideal for experiencing the evening fresh air when a cool breeze invites itself into the living space.

When going pear(tree)-shaped is all part of the plan. From the very beginning it was clear to the owner and to us that the pear tree on the property edge should become a part of the house. In honour of the tree a small kind of courtyard was created, which is bordered by the old vineyard wall.
